THE ARTESIAN UPDATE: REV. TIM BYERS 02-19-99update |
He Died Singing A story is told of the final act of John Masefields play, The Trial of Jesus, the Roman centurion is discussing the crucifixion of Jesus with Procula, Pilates wife. She asks him, Was He suffering much? No lady he replied. He wasnt a strong man. The scourging must have nearly killed Him. I thought He was dead by noon, and then suddenly He began to sing in a loud clear voice that He was giving back His spirit to God. I looked to see God come and take Him. He died singing. With His dying Jesus began to sing a melody of love for humanity unparalleled in history. On the cross He sang the song of suffering. Through His suffering Jesus was expressing Gods love and forgiveness for the world. The deeper the nails were driven into His flesh, the more passionately He loved. The greater His agony, the sweeter He sang. In His final moments he began panting desperately until His lips slowly parted and His head limply fell forward. He died singing for all of us. But was anyone listening? Jesus sang in front of an audience that had turned its back. Calvin Miller stated that Full well He knew that few would ever see Him as a singer of so grand a piece. His own family considered Him a lunatic. His own people rejected Him. The religious authorities of the day branded Him a heretic. The government of Rome labeled Him a traitor. All of His closest friends, His own disciples, forsook Him and fled in fear. The crowd, including the religious authorities mocked Him as He was dying. This, without exception was the loneliest death in history. There was one, however, that was listening. There was one who heard the music. While the world had turned its back on Jesus, a Roman centurion stood facing Him alone. The song Jesus had sang had pierced his heart. The centurion saw the way Jesus died. He saw first hand the horror of His death. He realized that Jesus was singing and suffering for him. At the moment of Jesus death, the centurion put to lyrics the song he heard. He sang a confession which, in the Gospel of Mark, can only be made at the cross: Truly this man was the Son of God. The centurion joined Jesus melody. Jesus song had become his song. It was a song of suffering. It was a song of love. It was a confession not made with a shout, but a whisper. It was sung with a shaky voice and quivering lips. Today, if we listen closely, we can hear the song and we sing it to the tune of the resurrection and the power of Jesus Christ. We become the voice to carry the song to all the world. Unfailing love flows from His heart and heals my soul, In spite of who I am He loves, and makes me whole. I almost cant believe its true, Unfailing love, and yet I know He gave His life to give to me unfailing love. | ||||||||||||||||
